Congratulations to Bob Gertsner for successfully campaigning his DK, Hooch vom Riverwoods, to a Derby1, Solms1 and VGP1. While in Germany, Hooch received "Suchen Sieger" or top search dog during completion of blood track work for the VGP.

The Road to Germany
By Bob Gertsner
The road to Germany began when I purchased a dog from Rob and Willie Engelking back in 1999. All I wanted was a hunting dog to replace my first dog that was aging and needed a rest. I worked with the new pup, Yano vom Riverwoods his first year and after a very successful first hunting season I realized there was a lot more to this dog then I could handle. So I sought the help of the local NADKC chapter who helped me through the Derby, Solms, AZP and finally to a prize 2 VGP.

Bob Gertsner with Hooch vom Riverwoods

About the time we ran our first AZP test, I was ready for another dog and that's when Rob called me and said he had a pup picked out for me that he thought would suit me perfectly. On the scene comes Hooch vom Riverwoods. I took a slower approach with Hooch then I did with Yano, as Yano was my top dog and this new pup couldn't possibly be as good of dog as Yano, or so I thought. I figured I'd use Hooch as a back up dog during hunting season. I also promised myself not to make the same mistakes I made with training Yano. Taking what I learned from Yano and applying it to Hooch wasn't always the best way to go as I learned they are two totally different animals in both physical and mental capacities.
So…back to my buddies for some guidance and help. This led to a Derby1, Solms1, VGP1 and the Albrecht Keil award, which needs its own story. But during the blood track work for the VGP, I determined I had a good solid tracking dog and decided to push the limit and go for a 20 hour 1000 meter confirmation. I entered a test in May put on by the VDD in Pioneer, Ohio, but they cancelled due to a lack of dogs entered. Man, five months of training work down the drain. This was when Willie said there was a test in Germany and if I thought we could do it, he and Rob would accompany me there. This starts a whole new adventure. A trip to Germany to see where these dogs all started, to see the people and their way of life, taste the food, and drink all the "delicious beer!"
Our stay was at the home of Herman Schomakers and his wife Angelina, truly gracious hosts who opened their home to me as if it were my own. There were four dogs in the test and Hooch was the "Suchen Sieger" or top search dog. As the other handlers, judges and guests congratulated me, I was in awe amd completely humbled, speechless and teary eyed of what this dog just accomplished. And I was just darn honored for knowing Rob and Willie. Time to drink some good German beer and toast my buddies that made it all possibleWillie, Rob, Rich Dobey, Johnny Rachford, Steve Kosmicki and Roy Ames, the blood and sweat of this club. My dedication expounds to these DK dogs as their dedication is true to us. "May we be the people our dogs think we are." (I stole that quote but I don't know who from.)
Waidmannsheil,
Bob Gerstner
P.S. Hooch just received his NAVHDA VC
